Hi to all,

Is some of you have ideas for replacing the foam (full of dust and oil) under the engine lid ?

I would remove the foam and replace it with Dynamite adhesive backed sound deadener and heat insulation.

Try the search feature for “engine cover insulation”. As always, others have attempted this project before you!

You could also use a good dishwashing soap, I am a believer in JOY, do a really good cleaning on the underside of that lid. Rinse really really well. DO NOT USE A PRESSUREWASHER. Then let dry really really well.
Then, use a rubber spray, or a brush-on rubber under-coating.
Made my original stuff look new.

Isn't Dawn Dish washing liquid soap the choice of animal rescue teams when there is an off shore oil spill?
If it's safe for cleaning oil off of Ducklings, it should be safe enough for cleaning that engine cover foam. Wink

Ahh, the power of advertising...
"Dawn" tends to donate for the publicity and goodwill.
And while I do use Dawn, if I really wanna degrease something, JOY is what I turn to.
I use to be involved in the maritime industry. Both engine crew and deck crew demanded JOY. Fine,,, but if they're wanting many cases of the stuff,, questions were raised about crew hiding sloppy practices in violation of US maritime laws..
Ducklings are traumatized, fragile living things. Engine deck lids,,, not so much...

Just to be clear. Semantics, semantics… Shocked

I’ve considered doing this for years but haven’t “pulled the trigger” yet.

Just did this on my engine swap. Mine was just falling into crumbs. If you are going for removal, know that there is a kind of chicken wire embedded in the foam. You will have to cut some of it. I used a flapper sanding disc on an angle grinder. It was a super dirty job wear eye and lung protection. I was amazed how thick it was. Used adhesive sound deadening pad to go back together.

Dynamat does have a product that would work well. It's on my project list.

https://store.dynamat.com/products/the-hoodliner

The issue with the old stuff is that it's old. It starts to break down and sheds small foam bits all over the engine.

i used a few cans of plasticoat and it works well. it absorbs into the existing foam and becomes a dense mass and deadens the engine noise considerably.

I’ve thought about this, but no action yet. Glad to hear it can work! …after a good cleaning, I’m sure.

Mine was flaky and getting dusty so I coated the whole foam insert with several coats of spray on undercoating from FLAPS. Sealed everything up nicely and looks about the same as when I put it on. That was close to 20 years ago.
