It’s good practice to remove drink labels from containers of poisonous crab like brake fluid.
Label off
Massively tape lid
Dispose deep in trash or recycle as available _________________ 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🍊 🍊 🍊 |

Good day. Went skiing in my beetle, found the beetle gas cap I lost night, fixed the gas cap (it was run over a few times), then rebuilt the axles for Stew.
The axles were gross. I found a broken boot, which I suspected because of all the caked on grease I had to scrape off the pan. I found a bag of used CV boots in my stash. Not sure where they came from, I think they might be EMPI boots I took off Peryl when I put the Tiguan boots on. I ended up replacing one boot per axle, the other two boots were still in good shape. One axle had CVs that were dated ‘73 and the CVs on the other axle were dated ‘82.
I used Valvoline - VV986 Moly-Fortified Gray Full Synthetic Grease that I bought from Autozone.
Stash bag, I still have 2 spares
Before
After
Hopefully I’ll have time tomorrow to pull the gas tank. _________________ __________

How come when you do it there isn't grease everywhere? I think I get more grease on the outside than inside the boots. _________________ John...in a 1969 Bus, morphing into a tintop weekender |

I kept a clean work area. I wore gloves and continuously wiped the extra grease off.
Today I removed the factory transaxle mount and shift coupler. The coupler is as all bent and loose and I’m sure the rubber on the trans mount is as hard and brittle. New mount went on with out much fighting and I didn’t have a coupler. I guess I didn’t order one yet, which I was surprised about because I have ordered a lot of parts already.
I drained the gas tank, there was about a gallon still in there. It was more like varnish than gas. I pulled the access panels and vacuumed some more mouse shit. I went to pull the strap nuts off and I guess I don’t have a 13mm deep socket, so I soaked the bolts in PB Blaster and I’ll pick one up this week.
The 3rd door was sagging a bit and sticking on the latch. Messed around with it for a bit and discovered the adjustment screws on the hinges. I adjusted those and the door works as it should now.
Then I turned to making an arm to adapt the beetle heat exchangers I have to work with the DCs heater cables. I’ll have a buddy weld the new arm to the arm on the exchanger.
I also stuffed some jute I had between the rear seat back springs and upholstery. The mice pulled a bunch of it out and I wanted to put something in there.
Good day, stoked to be able to carve out some time. It is definitely ice to be wrenching in the garage instead of out in the driveway. It’s warmer and dryer.
Transaxle mount
Adaptor arm
Don’t think gas should be that color
Jute
I got a lot crossed off my list

You are making great progress! I had a 5 page list to work through after buying my Westy. I've reduced my list down to less than 10 things still to do but it's such a good feeling to work through and cross things off the "To Do" list! _________________ *******************************

Fantastic work - you are waaay faster than I.
Question: what does
I modified the fresh air levers so they are quick release now.
mean? Modifying the little clips/bushings so levers can just be pulled out of dash, or something that opens fresh air flaps quicker like a bell crank? _________________ Craig K

^Thanks guys, I’m just doing one job at a time and trying to enjoy the process. Having it in the garage is a massive help.

I removed the plastic pins that hold the levers in place. The. I use a little JB Weld to attach the springs to the arms. Now I can freely slide the levers in and out. _________________ __________

Good day. Drove the beetle to the ski resort and shredded 8-12” of powder all morning. When I got home I adjusted the brakes on the beetle and worked on Stew. I worked on the full flow layout for a bit, I feel like I got a decent layout planned and need to do some more research.
Then I turned to the fuel tank. Unfortunately the studs that hold the straps down broke while attempting to loosen them. Bum deal, but I’ll figure out a work around. Upon removing the tank I noticed it was aftermarket, probably why it didn’t fit very good and it sucks that there’s no sock on it. Somewhere along the way a ground wire was installed on the sender, I’m guessing it stopped working at some point. The exterior of the tank was filthy, but the interior looked pretty good. I pulled the sender and preformed Telafords repair. I don’t remember what it does, but I know it makes the sender work. Then I scrubbed the exterior of the tank and cleaned the interior with acetone and some chain links. I think I’m gonna order a new filler hose and tank to body seal.
While I wait for the parts, I’m thinking maybe I’ll crawl back in the tank compartment and clean it up some. I vacuumed it today, but it could use a good wipe down.
Filthy tank
It cleaned up pretty good
Interior of the tank isn’t bad, bummed about it not having a sock
Sender repair

Not much time with Stew today, we have an event to go to. I measured the gas tank hoses so I can go to Autozone and buy new ones. I wiped down and vacuumed the area there the tank sits. Not easy for my 48 yr old ass to get back on there. I found 2 body plugs missing just in front of the wheel wells, probably why it was so dirty back there.
Then I measured out my FF system some more. I think I’m almost there, another parts order soon.
Right side clean, pretty big difference. Good enough for me.
My new Engle phosphate coded with the EDM hole lifters came in. They were only $20 more than the base line ones from Jbugs on Black Friday.

I’ve been looking for a used Vintage Speed exhaust for Stew. I want to install a Jermery Rock Jock hitch and the VS woks well with it.
Does anyone have one they aren’t using and would be willing to sell it to me?
Thanks! _________________ __________

Good weekend Vdubin. Saturday morning Miles and I took the beetle to the ski resort, that car is so fun. When we got back I did some stuff around the house and searched for parts. I dug out the carbs and I found 3 stock pulleys. One pulley was an early 70s beetle, one was from a late beetle and one was from a 68-71 bus. I decided to use the bus pulley. Since it only had the TDC groove I measured and cut in 10, 20, 30° timing marks and BDC with the pneumatic cutting wheel. Stoked on that! Then I cleaned it up and primed it. I’ll paint it later in the week.
Today I made a trip to the hardware store and picked up some small hardware for the carbs and the remote oil filter. When I got home I installed new exhaust studs in the AA heads I bought, they did not come with any. Then I turned to the carbs. I was stoked to see the phenolic spacers were still attached, I thought I was gonna have to buy new ones. I cleaned the carbs up and then tore them down. I sprayed out the jets with compressed air, set the floats, set up the throttle arms so they matched (within 1mm anyway) and installed 2.00 air correction jets.
Let’s put the carb jets here, not important right now. But, I know I’m gonna look back for this info and I’ll be happy it’s here:
Venturi: 28
Main jet: 115
Air correction: 200
Idle jet: 50
E-tube: F-11
Floats set at 11 and 20mm
I eyed up the location I want to use for the oil filter and oil thermostat assembly. I won’t have the rest of the components for another week, so that’s a work in progress.
While digging around yesterday I found the alternator stand knew I had and I found 2 oil fillers. One was a late beetle and I don’t know what the other one is as from. It has a single vent on the top and a downdraft tube, so I decided to use that one. I cleaned it and the stand up and installed a second vent, both vents will go to the carbs. Not sure if I’m gonna keep the downdraft or cut it off and cover the hole.
I also ordered tires. I bought 27x8.5 Kumho Road Venture AT. I saw the them For sale a few months ago but then they disappeared and I could only find the MT. I was looking for them because they were reasonably priced. Reviews are pretty good and I’m sure they will be fine. Definitely better than buying a no-name brand.
Doesn’t seem like much, but it was stuff that needed to get done.
Modified Pulley
Carbs, throttle arms and torn down
Modified oil filler
Remote oil filter. It’s gonna be tight, but I think it’ll fit if I use the short filter

I’d be more bummed about lack of slosh baffles. Not sure if any aftermarket ones do, tho. I’ll have to dig my Wolfsburg West one outta the rafters and check. You can put a screen on the fuel tap. And the sender always has a ground attached to it, but possible PO moved it somewhere different than stock.
Did you test the sender after repair? I managed to get one messed up by holding heat to it too long…
I’ve got my oil filter hanging from under the left rear corner. Air flow but some bump and debris protection. Smaller Wix or Mann filters. _________________ Craig K

^At this point I’m not worried about not having baffles or a sock. The tank is clean, that’s the most important to me. I will be using a metal fuel filter not a clear plastic one. Who knows what type of service this is gonna see and if it becomes an issue I’ll look for a new tank. But, for now and most likely forever it’ll be fine.
I did test the sender repair with a meter and it worked as it should. If it doesn’t work when I get it all back together, I’ll deal with it then. I do have the ground wire and leaned more about it after I posted about it, good looking out!
I have an oil filter only on my ‘65 Beetle, alone it does not offer much cooling. I will be an installing an oil thermostat and a 30 pass cooler with a fan, I just don’t have all the parts yet. I have 2 more orders to make, one with Amazon and one with CB. I know they won’t be the last, but they should be the last of what I need to get it rolling.
On a different subject, I researched the downdraft on the oil filler last night. Since I added the second vent to the filler and plan on running the lines to the carbs which basically makes it a closed system. I’m gonna eliminate the downdraft. _________________ __________

Rich. A quick question about the flow through your filter and thermostat system.
Are you planning to bypass the oil filter and oil cooler at startup/when the engine is cold and then when the oil gets up to temp and the thermostat opens up, the oil will then get directed through the oil filter and oil cooler?

^The oil will always flow through the thermostat and the filter. When cold the valve will be open and it will go the filter then back to the case. When warm (~180°), the valve will close and it will flow to the cooler, back to the filter and then to the case. The case will always see filtered oil.
This is a 90/10 thermostat, so at least 10% of the oil will always be flowing to the cooler.
Hopefully the cooler will be here by the end of the week. If so, I’d like to get this all mounted this weekend. Then I can reinstall the transaxle and half shafts.
Tires should be here this weekend as well. _________________ __________

This is how I stiffen up a coupler. Shouldered 2 1/2 or 3” 3/8 bolt, 2 fender washers and a nylon locking nut. Maybe not for you, but works great!

Do you get extra noise from the washers transfering vibration to bolt, thence to rod to cabin? A thin disk of silicone or similar between washers and cage should fix it if you do.
Considering how crappy some couplers seem to be, any extra noise is probably worth the reinforcement. _________________ Craig K
