My vote is for the open concept. Looks nicer and would facilitate escape in the case of,...........er,...... "a set of unfortunate events" _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

Three things to keep in mind:
Bus weight distribution is pretty close to 50:50 front-rear so make sure that the schwimmbus doesn't end up nose heavy
Buses are tall, so watch the vertical CG as well.
Don't do whatever Richard Hammond did on his Schwimmagon. |

Fibreglass replica top half to maintain center of gravity?
ZERO experience on these, but watching your video I noticed how much it rocked side to side with just you in it moving from driver to passenger side.

I stumbled onto this thread, and I'm... er... a little flabbergasted.
Just the thought that it's possible for someone's workbench to look
like this... it says something very cool:
Rock on. |

Worthy of a new post! ( I know, you're in the UK, the statement still stands.)
There's one other guy I know with ablilties similar. He's on www.vwrides.com

If you're seriously considering persuing another building project, I'd recommend doing a VW37 replica. The Grundmanns are planning such a project for right after they complete their VW38 restoration, so maybe they'd share their trove of drawings and photographs with you. I realize you're an amphib buff though, and your concept drawings look well executed. Just be prepared to get a lot of hate mail from the T2 purists, they have a tendency to get real upset over nothing _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

You guys are very kind with your compliments - I really couldn't do it without the enthusiasm shown here and on other Vw/military collectors forums - thanks again.
The amount of PMs enquireies I have had is unbelievable.

I have wondered for years why no one has made a fiberglass copy. Maybe just a passing copy, no where near as detailed as Mr Slug's here. _________________ 74 181 Thing

Koobel car make a fibreglass bodied replica 166 - they look really good, well worth checking them out.
A couple companies make replica steel bodies in Europe - they really are fantastic, and accurate in every detail - far better than anything I could do - the big (and expensive) problem is finding the mechanical parts to complete them.
My effort, is (I believe) a compromise. It is not exact in every little detail, it doesn't have front axle drive, it has had a few dimensions tweaked to allow the use of available VW componants..................and it costs about 15% of a real one - that is a lot of fun for your dollar.

Thanks again for the great comments guys - I really appreciate it. |

How does the engine connect up to the works? Is it directly off the crank?

Here you go -
The prop mechanism is one of the most intriguing part of the car - and mostly because it is pretty simple affair - genius in fact.
Here, outside rear, in the transport position. The unit is held up by a spring mechanism (much the same as an 'up-an-over' garage door), It also has leather straps as additional support.
The casing contains a triplex chain running over two sprockets, taking the drive from a simple oneway dog to the propeller. The dog engages when the unit is swung down. This is done from inside the truck with the steel rod - I learned from a real 166 owner not to do this with the engine running as it can snap chains.
Here, inside rear, behind the engine pully is the drive shaft and bearing that transmits the drive outside. The rubber cush drive is moved up the splined shaft to engage the pins on the engine pully.
Also the spring balance mechanism can be seen - the movement is transfered via a short chain, and puts pressure on that spring in either the 'up' or 'down' position.
General view showing the relationship that exists between internal and external componants.
.........maybe I should change my name to 'Bob'
