I’m running a stock engine (no clue what year) with dual bazooka Glasspack exhaust on my 66 fiberglass body buggy, while there great on the road. They get a little annoying in the parades. Any advice on what I could get to quite her down to a reasonable volume for under 200 bucks. Doesn’t have to be all pretty our anything, just good at its job. Thanks! |

If you want it quite, put back to stock. Just check your engine S/N against the Vin/Chassis numbers engine numbers link under Technical here on the Samba. Probably a H case so it would be a single port 1500 case. The 1300, 1500, 1600's used the same muffler. Without Heat Riser, With Heat Riser. CarCraft, ACN, AutoHausAZ,
RockAuto. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths!

I’ll check the code this weekend probably, I was thinking quite enough that you could talk could talk over it at idle without shouting, but not much quieter then that. Still talk loudly at each other in first doing about 7 mph. Right now if I stand behind the car and talk I have to yell to be heard with it just sitting there warming up. |

For our sand rail I just went to a muffler shop and bought a pair of glass pack mufflers that were the right size to slip into the outlet of the Bazooka mufflers. I just pop them in and snap a bungie cord on them to hold them in place. Really quiets them down almost to the stock muffler level.
I can take them off and on in 30 seconds depending on where we are and who is going to have to put up with us. You could screw on or tack weld them in place too for a more permanent installation.

I'm going to run a 1973 VW Thing dual exhaust. I figure since it's a reproduction stock system it should be pretty quiet. I had mine ceramic coated but it is still in a box in the spare bedroom waiting to be installed. _________________

I like the idea of being able to switch quickly. What I’m running right now has a roughly 1-1.5 inch inner diameter at its smallest point, do you think they make a Glasspack that would slide into something that small? I tried the inserts from j-bugs and they where to big. |

Here are some old picks of what’s on the car now, they weren’t taken with this purpose in mind, so sorry about the crummy angles. |

VERY cool old buggy! I love that shaded purple finish -- but I'm partial to purple.
I would look at the intake manifold. If the ends go strait down into the head you have a 40 horse engine. If they go in at an angle it is a 1300/1500/1600 engine. The ends of the 40 horse intake are part of the manifold, braised to it. The end parts of the later intake manifolds pushed down on the ends, but is a stamped part that is separate from the intake and loose when the manifold is removed (but captive, it cannot be removed from the manifold without cutting it apart.) Good advice is easier to give it when the engine is known. _________________

Now that I look at these mufflers I think they are actually resonators because you cannot see straight through them like a glass pack.
The problem I see is they might stick out too far. My engine cage goes back further than yours but there may be shorter ones available.
The bungie cord is a bit crude, split washers welded to both and springs would be neater and still be quick to remove.
Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the resonator idea, looks like a really good cheap but effective idea. I took some pictures of the intake, it’s a single port and I’m guessing it’s not a 40 based off of what EVfun said. I also took a pick down the Glasspack just to give and idea of what I have now. I’ll try and get the pilot cover off today if I have time, so I can get the block code. But it’s looking less and less likely.

Just grabbed the block code form underneath the alternator stand. I believe it to be 5737782 but I’ll let you decide if the first one is a 6 or a 5 on your own. That would make it a 1961 1300 engine correct? Is there en even such thing. These model years and engine sizes never did make since to me anyhow.

The 1300 was a one year only engine in this country. 1966. A very desirable engine in my view, if left stock it was pretty torquey and had the longest service life of any factory Beetle engine. |

That’s kind of ironic cause my buggy is registered as a 1966 beetle, though I’m fairly sure the car has gone through at least 2 engine swaps, for various “improvements” I don’t think it ever blew one up |

Those are 40hp heads, so you need an exhaust that is made for a 40hp 1200cc, because of the width. _________________ Pres. Rivercity VW Club www.rcvwclub.org
