Spent the weekend knocking out some things so that the car is ready for my son to start learning to drive a manual transmission.
Here is a list of what we accomplished this weekend.
- Polished all the contacts in the tail lights and saved the housing screws for better ground contact to brighten up the bulbs. Put new gaskets on the tail lights and added LED bulbs for added brightness.
- Found out why one headlight was dim. It was the wrong headlight. Ordered the correct 6V headlight.
- Put the ISP ignition switch in.
- Put on the new steering wheel.
- Fixed the speedometer
- Put the glove box and windshield wipers back together, added chrome trim to dash and grab handle. Added cigarette lighter. Cleaned up wiring and tucked up under dash
- Put in non-retractable seatbelts ( we'll see, may go back to retractable.
- Put the new TMI black carpet kit in.
- Reinstalled seats
- Oh and added stickers and hawaiian Jack antenna ball

I can see that your son is into vws and type 3 in particular at young age, buddy. It is a reminiscent of the past. I was younger too when I started getting involved into vws, and, thereafter, there is no turning back . Congrats and keep us posted, buddy! Its a good start for your son to know how to fix a vw.
thanks,

It's been a while since I updated this thread.
We have made some progress but not nearly enough as life gets in the way. We had a leak in the house which required major renovation. Then we decided to get the back yard ready for my older son's graduation party which included tearing down old patio covers and rebuilding with Alumawood covers and a long list of honeydos. Then my father in law had a triple bypass and stroke. So needless to say, life gets in the way of these kind of projects.
We lowered the front end and replaced the shocks and boots on all the tie rod ends and upper and lower ball joints.
We replaced the fender beading, rubber around the trunk and rear hatch, rubber around the doors, fixed the fuel gauge and brake lights.
We replaced the rubber around the pop out windows. What a job! The windows come out easy. The screws in the frame were rusted so that required drilling the screws out and re-tapping the holes and finding the right hardware. The 50 year old rubber was cemented to the frame and window. Getting it all back together with inner and outer rubber all aligned properly in the frame is no small feat.
I can't wait to get the new wheels and tires on her with the brick red interior.
We next got the carpet, door panels, and seats out of the car. We need to replace the rubber around the doors in the front windows next. Then fix turn signal and get the ignition back in the car. Then it will be down the shop to get the headliner put in along with new rubber around the other stationary windows, and the dash pad installed. Then back home to finish up the interior. Hoping to have my son driving this thing by the middle of summer. We'll see.
Here is how she is sitting today after dropping the front end two inner splines.

Question...did you remove the entire spindle to lower it? You only need to pop the lower ball joint out on the arm/big nut side, not the spindle side. The upper ball joint and tie rod end don't need to come out. |
Yep, I removed both of them because the upper boot was cracked as well as the tie rod end boot on the inside at the steering arm. It was easier to make the spline adjustment with the spindle completely out of the way. |

Well I forgot about the taking the pressure off the ball joint bolts before removing them on the drivers side. So I rolled the threads. Struggled getting the spindle off for about an hour or so. Once I figured out all of my problems, the passenger side was done in about 30 minutes. I am going to need new bolts, ball joint boots, shocks, and tie rod ends. I went down two outers.

Still on stock tires/wheels? Try lowering 2 inner splines down. Use a jack to take the pressure off the special lower ball joint bolts when you remove/install them! |

Question on lowering the front suspension:
I have read every thread on here on lowering the front but I am not sure if both the upper and lower arms need to be adjusted. I think it is just the lower but can someone confirm for me as it seems a bit weird to me to only adjust one. Thanks for your help. |
The upper is a sway bar. The lower is adjustable; inner or outer spline/combination of both. |
Ah, got it. Thanks! Sunday's project. |

All right. Starting to make some progress.
Got the plates.
Refurbished all the gauges and even widdled a new speedo needle out of a light switch cover plate.
Traced the fuel gauge not working to a bad sending unit. Adjusted the brake and clutch pedals to stop at a better position. Traced the brake lights not working to a bad brake switch on the master cylinder.
Took the type 3 steel wheels to the sandblaster and powdercoater this week. Ordered the new interior and picked up a butt load of parts from ISP West. All new rubber, new dashboard, new parts for the sunroof, All new trim.
Also found a set of rare and expensive sunroof cables. |

Little Gauge refurbishment. Couldn't figure out how to open up the clock and check the internals.
