Get that garbage out of there too.
I spent significant portion of my life looking at vehicles (and other things) on thermal nightscopes. You aren't losing heat through the bottom of the bus. You're losing your heat through the glass, the door seals, and, if you have one, the westy top.
All you're doing down there is making yourself feel green-- I guess-- and causing rust. Not sure what it is about every #vanlifer for stuffing wool in their vehicles. Maybe it is a tenet of the religion (along with unnecessary solar and composting toilets).
Wool sure as hell does absorb and retain water. What it's known for is retaining its ability to insulate your body, some, even while wet. That was cool before we had certain synthetic clothing, but it has nothing to do with vehicle insulation.
Get the insulation out of your bus if you live anywhere with humidity. |
We're not talking about wool for clothing but "rock wool insulation" to limit heat & cold transfer especially wile camping. I'm not here to argue. |

It's kinda of like "owning" a cat. You can pretend to make all the decisions and you have to pay all the bills, but "staff" is really a better descriptor than owner.

Thanks avwa and owner of B.O.B. Good to see what could be done. Given the pace I work at, I'll need my own garage before I open up the '81. I mean how bad could it be? LOL.
2008 or so
view looking from front to rear behind kitchen cabinets. Though I sprayed rust convertor paint on that, I'm sure it's been rusting out from the bottom side.

Welded in.
I had to outsource the job - I wish I had the space, equipment, skill, and time to have done it myself.
The guy at the body shop (hard to find nowadays) took the old side panel and recreated the edge of the floor that was rotten. He even fabricated the "ridge" on the inside along the floor. Awesome work.
Here is a pic from a bit later in the process.

Great looking job. Luckily mine wasn't that bad but bad enough to replace the outer section of the floor, about 2-1/2 inches by 3 feet. |

Ahhh yes... another victim of that soggy insulation.
What a great idea it was to stuff that s#$# back there. |
Wasn't even damp when I took it out but sure was years ago. It's raining here now so I placed it along with some other materials outside to see who wins. |

The before picture doesn't look bad and it wasn't really but I knew it was there. Stopped the water years ago and it never got worse, it was all dry when I cut it open. The new panel will be spot welded on the bottom and epoxy bonded every where else. |

It's also dry season. As someone without a garage myself, I can relate to the impossibility of tackling rust work in the winter. _________________ '90 Little Blue Truck, 2WD auto, FAS GenV 2.0 NA (AVH) |
