Back when I daylied a 63 baja I had a winter engine (stock-ish 1600) and a summer engine (1776 kadron motor). The 1776 is now my fastback engine (after many changes).

Yeah, no idea on why someone would take the steering column apart either, unless they were changing the ignition switch. I hate those early columns too, as I had to redo mine for my T-34. In my 65 Notch, I used a late model column head with the early tube and late column shaft (mixed and matched the pieces) to make everything work.
I find it's always handy to have a spare engine around. I learned that from the 90's when I was driving a beetle back and forth to work everyday. Since I sold my beetle, I keep a spare engine for my type 3 in the garage (converted 73 T-1 to T-3 with T-3 cooling tins).

I don't blame you on the "fighting" part. The PO didn't do you any favors either. When I did my 64 T-34, there were times I got upset, because I felt I was fighting myself. That car took me 3 years to do, mainly hunting down the T-34 only bits. It didn't help it sat outside for 20 years before Russ (the guy I got it from) bought it. Granted I'm okay with doing rust repair (I put the floor pans and front clip on it for Russ), and the floor pan being a type 3 (I have experience with it) made things go easier, it was the goofy stuff like pop out window latches, or the rear trunk latch lock, or the little odd ball stuff for the front trunk, or the head light stuff, or the fog light assemblies (ALL T-34 only) that made things more of a challenge. Granted I had the pan done quickly, and then spent almost a year solid on doing rust work, as that car unlike other VW's wasn't sealed to prevent rust, and there was a lot of it. When I finally got to the point of putting the interior together, the Sew Fine carpet was about 3 inches too short for the tunnel, the headliner was only available in one color (off white (tan?)) and the windlace strips weren't correct either. It was those little things that ticked me off. Then the door window seals wouldn't fit correctly, because they were for the later car, not the early ones. It just seemed like one nightmare after another, except it was happening in the day time.
I did a 73 Thing in less than 5 months that had been sitting for 20 years that was so much easier, even though it got painted inside and out. The hard part for that car, was the gas heater that I sent out for rebuilding, as I didn't know anything about them. With a little help from my son, we even replaced the vinyl top and assembled the side windows, and rebuilt the original engine. That was a fun project, as it went like it should, quick and easy.

It looks good with the body back on. It's a shame you're going to sell it off, especially with all of the time you've got into it. Oh well, you wouldn't be the first to give up on a big project like this one was.

Today a couple of friends came by to help put the body on the pan so I decided to bolt the engine up to the transmission to reduce the cars footprint as much as possible

Something I found out today which is making me a little unhappy is that both rear drums are stuck solid. Not a hint of movement. I think the big bar might persuade them a little.

Now I just need to find 3 guys to help drop the body on the pan so I can move it around the shop and make room for the beetle which is going to need an engine swap.

Started in on the rear assembly today. There was a bag of hardware that came with all the body/suspension mount stuff.

The center mount was super easy to figure out, a couple of rubber bushings and a mounting plate.

There was only one bolt like it but I have been taking beetles apart for 46 years and have never discarded a single fastener so a matching bolt was easy to find.

Tapping nuts and threaded holes and running dies over bolts was the most time consuming part of the whole afternoon

The mid year stuff is only a pain if you're not aware of it. Most of the time it's not really a problem, as most people own a car a year or two above or below the change. In your case, the rotors are the same for 4 years, and directly interchange with a Ghia.

Yes, those will work. Just use your old bearings and races, so they'll fit your spindles. Remember I mentioned the mid year change in the rear bearing for 68. The rotors are the same from 66 thru mid 71, so you'll be good with them.

I'm pretty sure they are for the sway bar trailing arms.

Those go on the lower bolt hole of the opposite lower torsion bar (sandwiched between the bolt head and the beam), with the long ear over the trailing arm lip. If you do a search, you can see how they go, and how they work. They're a keeper to keep the trailing arm from coming out/off. I don't have any pics of them, but the Bentley manual does in the front end section.

CIP1.ca was good to their word and acknowledged their mistake and gave me a credit to get the correct tie rod ends.

Bought a couple of taps, M14 x 1.5 right and left hand thread

I media blasted the rods, POR15'd them and tapped the ends and assembled it all

I think those are for either the upper or lower trailing arms, and are for wear (they fill the gap, which is why they're covered in grease).
The others are correct. You should also have 2 flat rubber pieces about an 1/8th inch thick (about 2 by 3 rectangular) for the rear sub to the floor pan mounts.They go between the two parts with short 10mm bolts. Of course at this point in time they might be stuck to either the rear sub, or the pan.
