Dont laugh too hard. Laughing Laughing It will work for what I need it for. It had to be built on a budget so WTF. The tube is .250 wall and the header is .375 wall "C" channel. Its all mig welded and got painted today with some commercial grade galvanized paint. Gonna wire and plumb it maybe tomorrow.

Only thing see wrong is no bottom brace on plate.... You are going to have 300 pound bucking and shaking, cantilevered on one single weld.... Structurally its a poor setup... You need a bar from crossbar at top to bottom behind plate belhousing is bolted to....

Must take up a lot of room when not in use.

Actually, if you look close at the back side, you will see 1 of 2 large gussets that are also .250 thick. We overlaped the plate onto the header so that gave us a good weld on front top and a good weld on back.

I like your prediction though of bucking and shaking. I will video my first run with it just in case your right. Might be fun to watch a test stand wobble down the drive and into the road. I will post on youtube.

However you will owe me a beer if it is smooth and steady.

Yea you have a little gusset on there, but you still have a bunch of weight that is cantilevered on that plate. All the gusset did was move the axis down lower. It would be very easy to add another cross bar on the bottom to strengthen it up.

Sure would suck for a newly built engine to hit the floor cause something didn't hold.

It was conceived and built in Kansas, before I moved to TN. Then I made another one when I moved here. Smile

My test stand measures torque and RPM. HP can be calculated form the data.
It has two B-17 aircraft generators, which pivot on bearings to apply force to a load cell. It can generate 800 amps at 30 volts, which is 24,000 watts. The load bank can toast a slice of bread measuring 3 feet by 3 feet. It can be used with gas engines or electric motors. My electric car motor in the picture generated 72 foot pounds of torque at 500 amps.

That is just too cool!

Where on earth did you come up with B17 aircraft generators?

What are you using for the load bank?

The loads were made with two banks of Nichrome resistance wire; each load consists of 15 wires 12 feet long. Each Nichrome wire is wound into a coil and mounted to two aluminum buss bars. Each load has a resistance of 0.075 ohms, which draws 400 amps at 30 volts. The generators can operate at 1,600 amps (almost 100,000 watts) for a short period of time. The load turns red when operating at full power; it looks like a large heater and heats up the garage in a few minutes.

Thanks!

So the 15 (per bank) wires are configured in parallel?

Max

Yep, I'm still looking for a 3' x 3' slice of bread to toast.
