I did a complete rebuild on the drum brakes (i.e. new master cylinder, new wheel cylinders, new shoes, turned drums) and repacked the bearings.

Three of the four wheels spin freely but the left front is dragging badly and I've not yet even bled the system (yes, I have fully backed-off the adjuster star wheels).

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Ken

remove drum, inspect shoes for propper seating on holders, make sure springs, e brake and associated parts are correctly installed. make sure shoe ends are correct shape.
Also sometimes the shoes are not centered well, but will become centered when brakes are activated.
Bug On!

No mention of the return spring. Look it over: properly seated/have enough tension?

The real problem with NA engines is you don't hear the nice whine of the turbo as it spools up.
Where do you put the inter cooler for it at? And does it use its own coolent?
Before I commit, I'm going to do more research because I don't really know what piston rings are.

Are the adjusters installed properly? They only go in one way because of the 'angle' in the slot.

Sounds like a bad brake flex line. Flex lines are actually each one line inside the other. What happens is the inner sleeve after so much time (about 8 to 10 years) breaks up and turns the line into a one way valve. Pressure will go to the wheel, then takes a long time to go back to the MC. Causing the shoes to drag against the drum and possibly causing a fire.

If it has been about a decade or who knows when flex lines were last replaced. Then time to do so and save you more headaches out on the road.

Sorry, forgot to also include new flex lines.

I ruled out the drum and the bearings as problematic by swapping with the right side. It seems the drum gets hung up pressing it on the last 1/4" or so.
Can anyone spot a problem here:

This is a 'wild ass guess' but could the backing plate be slightly bent? This could cause the back of the shoes to have a slightly larger diameter than the front.

One of the adjusters is installed upside down. Slot angle needs to match shoe angle. Check the wheel cylinder slots to make sure one of them isn't upside down too.
(rear wheel, but same deal)

Bottom right adjuster slot needs to be rotated 1/2 turn so slot lines up.

It is the adjuster screw on the right bottom of the photo as indicated above. Remove that shoe, then rotate the screw 180 degrees, then reinstall.

If you look at the adjuster screws they are angled and the shoe should sit flat in the screw face-if not you have it installed backwards!

Here's some pics that help illustrate what the others are talking about:

In the upper pic you can see that on the late model adjuster screw the slot is cut all the way to the threads on one side. This is the top of the adjuster screw.

You can see this in the bottom pic on the right side as the screw is virtually cut away so you can see the bottom of the shoe rests on the slant inside the slot. Compared to your pic where the shoe is being held further away by the inverted screw slot.

Y’all are pretty good. Both adjusters were upside down. Thanks so much.
