Where is the egine number?

...OK, this is a stupid question...

Where is the engine number located on my 71 Super Beetle? Also, this number should match the VIN if its original?

Also, while we are on stupid questions...cylinder #1 is on the right side toward the front of the car (facing the rear)?

No, the engine number does not match the VIN.

Sitting in the seats facing forward determines left and right........always!

Many replacement after market engines do NOT have engine numbers.

Cylinder location......... Spark wire into the cap locations may vary depending on how the distributor drive gear was installed!.............

Did engine number ever match VIN's? Or is there any way to tell if its the original motor?

NO engine # never matched the Chassis # (often called VIN). Look up your Chassis number on the chart below and you can find what engine # range your car originally came with ... same with transmission (again not marked with Chassis #).
