I'm starting to lay out the carpet kit I got from Sewfine. On the underlayment ... does it basically go only on the horizontal surfaces? Or should it also go over the tunnel and up the sides?

It actually goes over all 3 surfaces. I normally start up on the front wall, then do the sides, (working my way back) followed by the rear kick plates, then the main floor last. I hope this helps.

Thanks! I've never done this before.

Here's a walk-around of the kit.
https://youtu.be/MsmDu5L_HO8

Some questions to start.

Does the padding get glued to the back of the carpet?

On some (particularly vertical) pieces, do I glue the pad to the painted car? I'm looking particularly at the piece at the rear of the frunk.

What kind of glue? 3M super99?

I'm not sure what the current preferred product is, I'm sure some 3M glue I used to use can't be had any more. Also originally there were tiny nails.
WCM has them www.westcoastmetric.com/i-22964315-carpet-nails-fo...odels.html

Yeah, not going with nails. Spent too much effort sealing things up to start poking holes.

So when I did it earlier this year, I used 3m Super 77 initially. I would not use that. I ended up using vinyl carpet adhesive for almost every location. That actually seems to work even for the verticals and under the dash bits. I did use props and braces to hold the verticals and slants in place while the adhesive set.
That said. I did not use adhesive on the floor sections. I wanted the ability to lift them up if they get wet.
I did not use the OG fiber sound deadening for the floor but the same foil/rubber deadening I used in the door and other locations.
No carpet nails. I did use Velcro strips for that section behind the foot pedals to hold the slope and verticals in place. It seems to work okay thus far.

Velcro sounds like a great idea in several places.

I left a few comments on your video before watching you figure it out. Laughing

It's weird that they make all the pieces separate like that. My kit from TMI years ago has a the front floors + the tunnel, same with the rear floors + tunnel. This makes it easier in my opinion, as I just velcro'd those floor pieces and the weight of the floor pieces held the tunnel down. Also, the rockers being separate from the front wheel wells is a new one to me too.

I glued the front firewall, front wheel well + rockers, and the rear seat kick panels. The floors+tunnel were just laid in there with velcro. I have not done front frunk carpet, or rear trunk carpet. I've always tried to keep the original trunk liner or that style.

What would you use for adhesive?

In my Notchback that I just did, it only uses 3 pieces...which made it way easier than yours! Laughing I used some Gorilla glue spray adhesive. The vinyl pieces on the front wheel well pieces get glued to the door channel opening, then held down with the pinch welt. You were on the right track on the video.

Very helpful. Thanks! I like my carpet, just trying not to screw it up.

I see your wiring around the fuse box is about like mine. I've been thinking about making a panel or something to contain the nest a little bit.

Meh, you can only really see that from down low. There's a lot going on there in that corner, I try not to disturb anything.

Keep in mind that VW used Velcro to hold the floor carpet in place on the later cars (69 on for sure).

Max,

I wish I knew not to use 3m as well. There is an upholstery guy on youtube that covers that as well. But you need a spray gun..

We use this at ISP and it's pretty fantastic. You do need a compressor and a spray gun but contact adhesive like this beats whatever you can buy off the shelf.

like shown above... contact cement is great!
i have used a Critter Siphon gun before.... they're very cheap and can be used with a a normal small compressor.

here's an example...
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006FRPJ/ref=a...e&th=1

Tip: the spray tip will occasionally get clogged so you'll need to keep a needle to clear the blockage

Tip: spray on the surface, and spray on the back of the carpet and let it sit... 5 minutes works great... just let it get tacky.

Well. Looks like I'll need to get a spray gun. Recommendations?

Nevermind. That critter thing looks OK.

i just saw that the one on amazon is about $50... check harbor freight... i bought mine for about $15...

i would check youtube on how it should work.... it doesn't "spray" a mist of contact cement...it sort of spits it in a sort of a fan...
use a test piece of cardboard and fine tune the adjustment.

When I did my T-34, that's what I used. However I also used a plastic butter container (cleaned of course) and a 2 inch brush, and brushed it on (both the car and the carpet). That seemed to work pretty good for me, and allowed me to fine tune the fit of the carpet. By using the butter bowl like I did, I was able to pour some of the glue into it, as use only what I needed to at a time (controlled the fumes I had to breathe).

So I've ordered the gun and the contact cement. We'll see how it goes.

For the main interior floor carpet and rear foot well parts my plan is to glue the padding to the carpet and then to sit the combination on the floor with no further securing mechanism. That way I can easily remove them if they ever get wet or just require cleaning. Recall that I applied a type of bedliner material to the top and bottom of the pan.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

For the side pieces and the tunnel coverage ... those may get glued down as will the piece up under the steering column and drain hoses. Also the kick-panel sections and the vertical pieces under the rear seat.

Up under the frunk ... I may not even install those. It looks so nice all clean and such. I might change my mind there.

Now for the back. Recall that there's this padded material that also came with the kit. I think it's supposed to go under the roof before the headliner. I'm already past that point. The roof got the same sound-deadening I put on the doors.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

But I think this stuff would do nicely on the rear load-deck around the engine hatch, raising the level to just about to that of the cover. Then the carpet/padding combination can be laid over the top and up the bulkhead secured by velcro.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

What do you all think?

Max
