6-volt starter and a 6-volt flywheel with 12-volt electrical system
Hybrid 12V Starter on 6V Flywheel NO Mod   Price: $245
I'm going on 13 years producing my Hybrid starter with over 200 sold and still going strong.
First one sold in 2008. Thank you to all the people who bought my Hybrid starter.

When you convert your VW form 6 V to 12 V you can replace your starter with the HYBRID 6/12. No modifications are necessary to install this 12 V starter in a 6 V transmission with a 6 V flywheel. 100% stock parts are used to built the Hybrid starter, which means it can be maintained for the life of the starter.

You donít need to spend the time and money to remove the engine, replace flywheel, Pressure Plate, Clutch Disc, Release Bearing, pinion bushing or grind the bell housing. Using a stock 6 volt starter in a 12 volt conversion will damage your flywheel and starter teeth. Donít risk sudden starter failure and getting stranded with a burned out 6 volt starter.

Bushing remove and replace:

All starters are 100% tested in a trans without engine, to the following performance specifications: Test voltage 11.5 V; Solenoid current < 11 A; Total current < 55 A.

The first one was sold 10 years ago and is still going strong trouble free!

Here are your other options:

Install a 12V starter for $220, 12 Volt flywheel $90, O-ring $2, Shims $10, Seal $3 and a 6/12 bushing $3 Pressure Plate 200mm $59.99, Clutch Disc 200mm $34.99, Release Bearing $24.99

To install a 12 Volt engine in a 6 Volt Manual Transmission the following flywheel is available. This special flywheel can be used when you want to install a later style engine into an early 6 volt car that has been converted to 12 Volts with the HYBRID 6/12 starter.

Take a look at some the issues about changing the flywheel;

Bought one of Wayne's hybrid starters. Excellent communication, quick ship and well packaged. Works great. VERY happy customer. So nice to have this sorted!

So I finally got Wayne's Hybrid starter installed but not without replacing the gear ring. YES I AM VERY HAPPY, the car has never run so smoothly. I don't know how to describe it but just by the noise the starter makes when it begins to spin I can tell that it is not hard on it, there is definitely coordination in the movements between the pinion going out spinning and interlocking with the teeth of the gear ring. No more of that nasty grinding sound like the starter is tying to "drag along" the flywheel for a spin. I did notice that on previous comments the gear ring is not always mentioned. To me it may be obvious but I suppose not to all, you cannot resolve the issue 100% without also checking your gear ring for damaged teeth. I am attaching here a picture of the gear ring still on the flywheel which was removed. I had an extra flywheel prepped ahead of time. Just imagine what would have happened if I had installed the new Hybrid starter without replacing the damaged gear ring!!!!
Yes it is true that means more work and more money spent, but what choice would anyone have? Let me ask you , imagine you had to get new tires for your car specifically because they had worn out at an angle due to the alignment being totally off. Would you spend the extra money for a new set of tires and yet not get an alignment?
Not sure if the resolution is good enough but I am posting the picture of the worn out teeth on the old gear ring, half the teeth have been grinded away by the old 6v starter. GO THE EXTRA MILE AND REPLACE YOUR GEAR RING TOO!!!!!!

Hi Wayne,
It got up to 30 today and all day at work I kept saying "why wait ". My wife had told me she was going to do something with a girlfriend tonight so it worked out perfectly.
I'm thrilled to say that the starter, so far, has performed flawlessly! I even turned on the headlamps for a full minute, then left them on while trying it and she cranked over smartly. Something I could never do before. I was nervous while making the wiring connections, and the first time I went to try it I was holding my breath, but then I thought " come on, This is an official Wayne Johnson starter you've just installed". It cranks the motor over with some authority, almost like it were a 6 volt running on 12 volts. I didn't expect it to crank that fast, but whatever, it sounds and works good. Like I said, I'm thrilled! Mike

"I got the HIGH TORQUE HYBRID 6/12 starter installed yesterday complete with new bushing as instructed. It cranks the engine over super fast. It starts like a New Honda, now! I am so thankful that you are supplying these."

My wife ordered a 6v/12v starter from Wayne for her squareback. The transaction was smooth and shipping was fast. Most importantly, the starter is amazing. Highly recommended!!!

Wayne saved me time and money with his Starter it works perfect every time. I would recommend him anyone looking to go 12 volt. If you have a 6 volt VW and are wanting 12volt this is the only way to go!

Hi Wayne,
Am looking at a defunct 6 volt starter from my 64 Ghia (typical story: 12 volt conversion gone bad, grinding the teeth, few missing). Can you quote me a price on the BOSCH hybrid 6/12 starter?

From a Samba Member;
I have a 64 beetle that I believe the reason I got such a great price on was because it has the 6v starter running at 12vdc. It was a pain to get started because you had to bump it just right. I bought a starter from Wayne and it arrived and you could tell it was PROFESSIONALLY rebuilt and I installed it and now I love this car. I would recommend his starters 100%. They arrived packed very secure as well.

Wayne changed my outlook on my car.

From a concerned Samba member;
VW trans are magnesium not aluminum, and if the magnesium dust gets sparked while grinding out a bell housing you will have a small fire works display in your face. Just thought you would like that for your ad.

Hi Wayne,
After trying twice now to have a 6V starter motor in a 12 Volt System in my daughters VW and chewing up two flywheels, I really what to try your Hybrid Bosch Start motor. I'm located in Canberra, In the Australian Capital Territory.
I would love to purchase the 6V /12V Hybrid starter motor.

Hi Wayne,
Your hybrid 6/12 volt starter is installed and working great as of this writing.
Many thanks.

Just wanted to say that my Wayne Johnson hybrid 6/12 volt starter is still performing flawlessly after 3 years of driving. It was a great investment for me. Take care, Mike

If you get a rebuilt starter, take it apart and make sure the armature commutator has been machined parallel to the brushes and it has new brushes. It should also have a new bushing installed, use calipers for measurement. Ask the seller if the armature was tested on a growler for winding-to-winding shorts, winding shorts to ground and open windings. The solenoid current should not be over 11 amps after the solenoid engages and 22 amps before it engages and the total no load current should not be over 55 amps. Make sure it rotates in the correct direction; field coils for other starters will fit, but they cause the starter to rotate in the opposite direction. Make sure the solenoid is good; its screws are sealed so you canít inspect the contacts for ware without voiding the warrantee. You will need to unsolder the solenoid wires to remove the solenoid cap and inspect the contacts for ware, pitting and burning. Make sure whole starter is painted to prevent rust. This is how I test these starters. You can buy a 6 volt starter, but it will trash your flywheel teeth. Most rebuilds donít have the armature support adapter to perform the above quality control tests. However, most stores will sell you an endless supply of untested starters so can install them one by one, on your own time.

Beetle 1958-1966, Ghia 1958-1966, TYPE 3 1962-1966. You will receive a refund after the shop inspects and tests your core for damage. Starters used in a 12 volt system will not be accepted. Case diameter; 90mm, 3.543", SR11X.

The larger case Bus starter can not be converted, 16318. Case diameter; 100.2mm, 3.945"

The HYBRID 6/12 will replace 6 V starters on Beetle 1946-1966, Ghia 1956-1966, Bus 1950-66, TYPE 3 1962-1966

This post shows the damage to a 6 volt flywheel caused buy running a 6 volt starter in a 12 volt system. This causes the teeth on the 6 V flywheel and the starter to wear and even chip off. Your flywheel is being damaged with a 6 V starter operating with 12 V, EVEN THOUGH NO ABNORMAL SOUND IS PRESENT! The people who think itís OK to operate a 6 V starter in 12 V system have not taken into account the cost of repairing the damage to the starter and flywheel or the cost of the labor.

Grinding out the trans, what a mess. You have to grind the area around the mounting bolts, but be careful not to cut into the bolt tunnel. There will be a lot of aluminum dust, so remember to clean the area off.

The warranty covers starters against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year from the date of purchase, when itís owned by the original purchaser and remains installed in the vehicle in which it was originally installed. The starter will be repaired or replaced if the starter has failed under the terms of this warranty and the starter is sent back for evaluation. Spinning or powering the starter on the bench without a transaxle or shaft support fixture will void the warranty. A damaged, defective or warren flywheel will void the warranty. If any part of the starter is disassembled or the security seals are broken the warranty will be void. No cash refunds. The bushing is supplied with the starter, which must be replaced to maintain warranty. Each Hybrid starter is built to order; consequently, there cannot be any cash refunds. Warranty does not cover return shipping cost. NO CASH REFUNDS.

A new busing in included, put some grease on the starter shaft where it goes into the bushing.
