Thanks,
It would be nice if the work alternated.
Endless welding, endless filling and sanding when painting. If you then want to do metalwork again, you need a new project. An eternal cycle |
I couldn't agree more. That's why I always have 3 or 4 vw projects in different states going at once when I get sick of doing bodywork I'll go and do engine work, then rust repair, then sandblasting, it definitely is an eternal cycle.
Keep up the great work and posts, I love seeing updates on your bus! _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

A little unnecessary work.
The plate for the hinge attachment fell down into the B-pillar.

Now it's time for the tailgate.
The same condition as the other doors. A lot of material rusted away at the bottom.
I don't want to weld anything to the outer skin because I'll ruin the patina. I wouldn't be able to do it like this again.
I was thinking about gluing a bracket at the bottom to give it stability again. To replace the missing material and to avoid the risk of injury from sharp edges.
The sheet metal is very thin and pitted. I removed as much rust as possible, treated it with rust remover and primed it.
I then glued the sheet metal bracket in place.
After drying, I filed off the excess material.
I am very happy with the result
Let's repair the inner sheet metal. That's a bit more time-consuming _________________ my current challenge

Hi, it is a 2-component panel bond from Petec, 3M or similar. When it is dry it can be filed, sanded and painted over _________________ my current challenge

Hi, thanks for the kind words to you and everyone else following my thread. I enjoy showing you this, just as much as I enjoy looking at yours.
The current works. A fun mix of gluing, soldering and welding
I have to redo the entire inner bottom edge and the reinforcement.
First the reinforcement. Unfortunately I had to do it twice. I had measured wrong. These pieces were very time-consuming as all the bends have to fit to the millimeter
The repair consists of 6 parts. The reinforcement, the lower edge on the right and left with the sealing bed and the correct rounding. One piece for the center and the two sides up. A few rust holes were filled.
Now the lower part is finished and can be inserted _________________ my current challenge

Thanks,
The gluing and final welding work continued.
When applying a bit of Bondo, the tailgate ghost actually showed up and thanked me that his home was in order again. It can be seen in the lock area if you keep your distance from the picture.
As all the screws were rusted tight, I made a new screw strip for the hinge.
I am very pleased because almost nothing is visible from the outside.
Next up is something big again. Finally it gets its roof again
The end of the welding work is really in sight _________________ my current challenge
