i recently figured out how to redo type 34 hinges,
now others have their way,. but this is mine.
i used 2 different brand kits as not everyone can get a certain type, so i wanted variations of the same thing ,but both seem to be the same, HELP (38381) and NEEDA (383822)from my local FLAP,
it seemed to be more important to match the bushing hole, and just redrill the pin hole for a good tight fit.
(the HELP kit one has a third pin but it wasn't used for anything, )

and both work well,...and both have 2 pins and 4 bushings, i just showed both so you know what to look for
the rest is pics,. so feel free to ask me any questions if you have any,..enjoy!

so you got the old pin out....wasn't that a big ball of fun?
WooHoo!

you have to drill the old pin holes slightly for the new pin,
11/32 drill bit,.the new pin is slightly larger then the old one, hence the redrill.

now the second pin is slightly shorter then the bottom hinge but it works very well,.. the long pin i used for the top hinge and had to cut the excess off when done
each kit does 2 hinges, each kit ranges from 11 bucks to 9 bucks depending on your area.

Way to go Foxx; nothing like putting cheap Chinese Pep Boys crap in your Type 34. Rolling Eyes

But seriously: Nice work. I did mine with a drill press and a drill press vise, and went through absolute hell finding bushings to fit the OEM hinge pins. I didn't even think of FLAPS, I could have saved a lot of time and bullshit. A hole for oiling is a great idea, too.

Laughing
the Needa? kit ones came from O Reilly's auto parts
the HELP kit came from Advance auto.
pep boys is good for stickers and fuzzy dice, but they have the "HELP" stuff too.
anything is better then the plastic bushings that Germany gave us Wink

I used some VW 8mm valve guides to do mine. I had the outside of them turned down slightly, to fit the hinge part, and used some oil light bronze washers to take up the slack. I think I had maybe 20 bucks total in the 4 hinge assemblies. I did re-use the OE hinge pins though.

i know,..yours was a work of art,. but i donno if everyone has access to a lathe, so wanted a "over the counter" solution that anyone could afford and do.
plus it gives you new pins!
WooHoo! Dancing
i guess this would work also on t14 hinges too?
Question

Nice writeup Frank.
The best part is that the total cost came to about $10 -- Type 34s are expensive to restore, but we owners are all cheapskates at heart. Laughing

well,.. roughly 10 bucks per side. there used to be someone that redid them, but that was years ago, i figured it was time we all had something we all could do.
the same process is used for the lower hinge as well.
i was blessed with an extra set of hinges so i had the latitude to experiment.
the great part was once i had them apart,..i went to the parts store and started looking at the pin sets,..then asked the lady behind the counter at O-Reilly's if i could open up one as i was trying to adapt something to work,. she was most helpful in making this a success.

If you want to keep your Type 3 clean, i.e. only metric stuff on it, Porsche 911 uses 8 mm pins and bushes which look very much like those in the pictures in this thread.

The Porsche bushings are also reamed after installed in the hinge for a 100% fit.

To be honest, I expected myself to have been kicked out of T-34 World years ago (I'm not on facebook either Wink ), back when I was doing my T-34. My biggest problem, was I couldn't get answers when I needed them. But then, I was moving along on my project too quickly, and others on there hadn't gotten that far in their years of ownership. The big thing that bummed me out, was a year or 2 later, people would ask the same questions, and suddenly the answers appeared. Shocked
To be honest, I found the good people of the Samba Type 3 Forum much better help, as they wanted to see me progress. Also T-34.com (the T-34 registry) helped quite a bit too, as the archives still had a ton of info in them. But, the biggest help came from being on that forum, and having a conversation with Scott Taylor and Simon Kelley, and finding out that he (Simon) didn't know that the T-34 got several different sets of upper door seals thru the years, and that his were the 66 thru 69 style that he had made. That was the biggest headache I had with the car during assembly, and no one had gotten that far on their early car to find out his upper door seals DON'T work on early cars. It was Scott who helped me figure that one out.
