What is normal transaxle temperature on the freeway at 3,600 rpm? _________________ 1971 Westy, 2017cc 78.4 x 90.5 Tims Stage 1 plus 42x37, CB 44IDF's, 135 mains, 175 airs, F111, 50 idles, Engle 110, 30mm, 009, single QP, DD CHT 300*f, VDO oil always 180* Build: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=541370

I have not measured temps is but I would guess it stays below 150 or 160 degrees except for long hauls on a hot day at highway speeds then they probably hit 200'!
As far as the Hankooks go I just put them on the front, just the 185's and what a nice ride! love them. May go to 195's for the back but my Wildcats in the back are 27" in diameter and that helps the gearing a lot. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

After running those RPMs for a while pull over and use on inferred temp gun and you should get a pretty good idea. I'll try to remember to do that and get back. _________________ __________

I think Wildcats might be the tires that shredded on someone Vanagon a few years back. Keep in eye on the for potential failures. |

I heard somewhere else that WildCats had a problem, I thought it was handling. I will keep a close eye on them.
I want to get one of those infrared thermometers to measure Tire temps, and engine temps. I think there is a keychain model but the Fluke-62 Max Infrared Thermometer looks like it might be the best quality for an inexpensive hand held gun. But something like this would probably work Extech-IR100-Mini-Ir-Thermometer! _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

When I got home tonight I tested my transaxle temps. It was 180* at the engine joint, 140* at the axles and 110* at the nose cone.
My drive was 10 miles with a 7 mile 1200' climb from 6500' to 7700'. I took the climb at 65 to get the oil temp up to 200*. I will randomly check the temp to see if I find any differences. Hope this helps. _________________ __________

Interesting postings. Seems like the transaxle is a large heat-sink for the engine?
Also, thanks for the HD temp gun suggestion. I was looking for one that goes 800+ for exhaust component readings this summer. Couldn't find one that high for under $80 until I checked their website! _________________ One-on-one tech help for your vintage Volkswagen:

I agree. I also find a simpler pattern with my deep sump. When I shoot the gun at the oil temp guage I get a similar reading as the gauge. Then I'll shoot the bottom of the sump and it will be up to 20* cooler.
I have no basis for this but I also feel that heat exchangers act the same way. Just another way to remove heat and make your engine run at the proper temputure. _________________ __________
