I've seen those wear rings on Solex carb needle valves several times. Even though they seem to be made of stainless steel. They vibrate against their seats constantly when engine runs, at half engine rpm, with every stroke of the mechanical fuel pump. It's a design imperfection VW had to compensate for by including fuel cutoff valves in a lot of their engines, either as part of the fuel pump or as a separate device. I'd bet the great majority of "fuel in crankcase" problems are the result of those little wear rings.

UPDATE: Filled up the fuel tank for the 4th time. Next morning, I noticed a pool of gas on the floor.

The float needles had little groves in them !!!??

Found some 175 size replacements with VITON tips. They stopped the drip.

not sure if I posted it here.... but I did not have all the OEM trim from the PO. So I looked up the stick-on type. vinyl, easy to cut and has great holding power so far.

I figured if I trim the trim up a bit to get the Brazil mirrors on and then I don't like the Brazil mirrors for some reason, then I can re-install the trim.

I will say, though, that bus is so pretty with the deluxe trim and all that, I don't know if they fit the look!

I have a pair of those on my '78, put them on a few years ago. I don't recall where I got them. I wouldn't have said they were particularly low quality, though I think there was some kind of trick to making sure they stayed adjusted properly. It's in a thread around here somewhere...

Saw these on some Brazil busses. I like them. Bus Depot has them and they admit to low quality.... but $50 each is better than the $300 for the VW ones. Will be installing them today.

You can see that the sliding door bracket cover is off in these pix. I was waiting on parts to repair the door. I basically locked it, so only I would be the one to open it. The bottom rollers were worn enough to allow them to pop out. With the cover off, I could re-install all the rollers much easier, even by myself, but that door is HEAVY.

All fixed up now.

About the brakes: it seems to be the pad adjustment on the rear brake cylinders. I expanded them and they are much better.

We have been driving! Couple weeks back we drove to a BEER FEST. Got lots of comments.

I am having to learn about driving. It is so different. 1st real tank of gas driving around town got 28. Could be too high 😜. Maybe bad calcs, odo could be off. Too lean? More to come. Word is fill to the brim each time.

It has been a while since my last update... Let's see... I did get all the crazy shifting worked out. It is not perfect, but all gears work all the time.

I bought a Gene Berg shifter, but have yet to use it.

Moved on to CARBS. Got tons of help here and on 914world.com. They seem to be much better.... Also not perfect, but good.

Ran out my 1st tank of gas working on the carbs. On my 2nd tank now. Much better mileage.... noticed that I am about 1/2 way thru tank #2.

Have been taking short trips around our little town, getting smiles and waves everywhere we go. Took the Bus to a party. Everyone wanted to ride. The damn sliding door came off the tracks in the front. THat was a month ago. I bought new rollers, etc... but have yet to install. I locked the slider, so no one will try to open it.

I also found that the DRAG link ball joint was ruined. I had pulled it off and moved it by hand, thinking it was stiff. Once I drove around a bit, I could tell it was not. So I got that on yesterday, also lined up the steering wheel for equal turning right and left.

I am gonna make a post about the power brakes. They are not good either. I bought a new MC with booster, added a port on my carb manifold and ran a hose with a one way valve. But as I push down 1/2 way, the brakes are stiff. If i need to keep the brake held for 30 secs the pedal gets soft and drops. More to come on that.

Above link is from me, discussing the shifting issues that have taken about 3 weekends to fight thru.

But the post ends with my wife and me driving around the neighborhood for about 2 miles!!! A day that will be remembered.... tax day 2023 !!

When we pulled in the garage, I saw that the valve cover leak is still leaking [CRAP] but that is really it.

The sliding door needs alignment to get the gaps even, I need to install the drivers door Rolling Eyes , window, door card, etc..... probably should adjust the parking brake.

Applied for insurance on Friday, so that will be done next week.

I THINK THAT IS IT !!! Time to put some more miles on it. the ODO has something like 92,222 right now.

I had this NON-ALIGNMENT... wiggled the engine-trans assembly and got it to this point. Not sure I am gonna do better. But it is concerning, given the issues that follow.

I removed the bellows as the grub screw pinches it and makes it impossible to shift.... it is at least one thing that makes it impossible.

Prussian BLUE.... shows that it is even.

Some "experts" in my other posts have said that this design will hold tight. The key is only there to align the fan and its marks. I have been adding valve grinding compound and LAPPING this to marry them up.

Using a different fan, but the same hub. This fan had a factory mark that matched, so I used it this time. So folks know, the mark only aligns with the 0 scale. It is just a reference. But you have the disty, the flywheel and the others to get you to TDC.

as usual this update takes a few steps BACKWARDS.

Turns out that the hub that holds the fan to the crank shaft came loose. It is a taper fit and folks say when assembled correctly to the proper torque, they do not come loose.

I torqued it, but maybe the o-ring got pinched and broke torque. Anyway, with about 6 gallons of gas run thru the engine, I found this while syncing and tuning the carbs.

THe belt is vibrating and at the end of the vid, you can see the pull do the same. The wobble damaged the crank at the woodruff keyway and the key. The experts on here have suggested that I LAP the hub to the crank. They were not married at the factory, so I should have done that before.

So with some Prussian Blue and valve grinding compound I Lapped and Lapped and Lapped to hopefully give me more surface area to match.

After that, I used JB Weld and glued in the new woodruff key, added the new oring and thread locked the bolt.... torqued to 23 ft-lbs.


Nice new O-Ring installed from AutoAtlanta. They are close and delivered quickly. But damn, a $5 item they required $7 shipping.... so I bought two.

it is ALIVE. GREAT DAY. Electric fuel pump took a bit, but BOOM. once the bowls were full it started right up. Good fuel pressure for the carbs.

I will sync the flow on those next. I double checked the valve adjustment before i installed it. Timing was set when I ran it last summer on the garage floor. I need to add a spring to the carbs or the accell pedal or both. This is GREAT.

The test connection wires can be a nice place to get signals for a trailer light hookup if you so desire.

Carbs are installed. SYNC Cable is connected. I suppose that the oval hole in the firewall is for the accell cable. Note to others, I used a LARGE grommet to seal it off. It easily took the OVAL shape, cut a hole in the middle and the accell cable went right thru.

I think I am going to add a spring to help the Foot Pedal to return to the top. The grommet on the short pedal shaft is new and kinda sticky. A spring should help.

I searched all over and could not find a factory battery (-) landing point. So As some of the guys on here have done, I made one in the fender well. Drilled a hole, sanded away the gray paint, inserted the bolt from the fuel access panel, added a lock washer and some HD thread lock, then attached the (-) cable. Pre-cable attachment, I did hit the area around the attachment point with some gray spray paint.

Bought a 18" long 1 Ga (-) cable from Tractor Supply. 60" long red 4 GA (+) cable too.

The other wire bundle you see going up from the battery is whatever wires remain from the TEST CONNECTION. I suppose I could have just cut them out, we shall see if they ever cause problems.
