After nearly 50 years of labor in all sorts of industry and occupation I am moving on to the next chapter.
Next summer I am retiring.
My aging body is telling me I had better move on before I'm too crippled to enjoy the "golden years"
I don't necessarily have to work but I promised the (younger) spouse that I wouldn't hang around the house all the time Smile
My perfect part-time dream job only has a couple of requirements;

1. Start- leave when you want.
2. Take time off whenever and for as long as you need.

Hmm, I guess I just defined "retirement". Oh well

Curious if anyone else here has semi-retired" and what sort of things you did after your full time careers.

All serious and not so serious suggestions are most welcome!

P.S.
I have already applied for Chippendales Senior tour. They politely declined...

Handyman.

I play senior softball several times a week; this is not geezers stumbling around either. Mrs. Cusser won't let me become a handyman, she thinks I'd be too "handy" with women customers....

My dad retired but my mom wanted him to occupy himself. He had lived in a large northern L.A. suburb for 25 years and knew every neighborhood. So he got a part time job at a local real estate office, caravanning and recommending neighborhoods and houses to clients. He could choose his hours, talked to people all day, and enjoyed it for the five or so years he did it.

After a lifetime of work my dad volunteered and drove a van for America Red Cross twice a week. It occupied his time and allowed him to interact with others. Without realizing or paying attention he drove over 100,000 miles for them only throwing in the towel at age 88. He will be 93 next year and he ain’t slowing down much.

Where do you live? Do you like to drive around?

If in a more urban type area, how about driving for Uber of Lyft, or do one of those meal delivery deals if you don't want to deal with people (uber eats, grub hub, whatever).

That's probably going to be one of the most flexible gigs...

Retired in 2011...did security guard work for a while and decided forget about it. Heck I am retired and there is always something to do always. Fishing is always great and relaxing, now the catching parts is not so good.
I do not care to work for anyone anymore as I did it long enough.
Cusser has the right idea however.

I know of several retirees that drive cars to & from auctions or drive them across the auction blocks. Then I know others the drive for the airlines to deliver the "Lost luggage" to the owners.

some car dealers offer "shuttle service" to and from places such as shopping malls etc.

I just turned 50 and am hoping i can retire and do something easier by the time i turn 60. It will depend on how my Wifes health will be at that stage and whether i will need to take care of her 100%

I'm thinking about being an usher at the pro basketball arena (Oklahoma City Thunder). Nothing like an old geezer getting paid to work at a Metallica concert when the NBA team is on the road. The company that manages the arena also manages the minor league baseball park a few blocks away.

A retired buddy delivers parts for NAPA. The only thing he hates about the job is when the school bus shop orders 5 batteries.

They just built a big 10 mega screen movie theatre near me.

The grocery store I worked at 30 years ago still ask me to come back to work.

In 2016, I attended the "tryout" for Golden Oldies or whatever Arizona DBacks call the old guys who chase down foul balls and give them to little kids. I aced the written knowledge test, and caught every ball in the tryouts cleanly.

Didn't get chosen; there were like 120 folks at the "tryout" for like 16 spots, and DBacks wanted several returnees and had a quota for female retrievers. So somewhat rigged. I did notice that sometimes these old folks do not show up so one of the DBacks employees does substitute.

Not trying again. Position was like 20 games a year, with pay and free tickets.

Why not build vw motors in your garage/basement, and tutor the next generation.?

Just do something.

Of all the older people I know the healthiest and those who retain the most cognitive abilities have worked well into their later years.

My mother worked until she was 78, still volunteers 3x per week and at 83 is as sharp as most 50 year olds.

In my opinion the more you exercise your brain in the better off you are

When I am not working on projects at home I volunteer at the local science musem, and seems like I learn something new every day.

I have now prepared and mounted priceless and rare fossils (and reproductions) for display, visited other museums to study their collections, and have also been on 4 different expeditions collecting fossils.
