Aloha All,
Just wanted to introduce my newly acquired '68 Squareback. It took one day to complete the sale, but three weeks of minor setbacks to finally get the Square delivered to the Matson port in Long Beach, Cali. Trying to make calls out of Afghanistan (where I'm currently deployed) was very daunting. But she'll be leaving Long Beach and should be arriving in Kaua'i in early July.

Since I already have my '68 Fastback waiting for me in the garage and will be undergoing a mild restore/refresh (bodywork, engine and transaxle overhaul, electricals redone) when I get back...I needed a daily driver. Why not make it another Type 3 hehe Very Happy

I plan to keep the Square almost to stock (interior and exterior trim relevant to it's year or earlier) with some fine tuning to it's suspension. There's a few things the PO did to the interior trim (dash and headliner) that I don't agree with, so I'll be replacing those when I get the chance. Will also be de-accessorizing it and try to keep her simple and clean looking without distractions hehe. Have you noticed the "shaved" front cowl Sad According to the PO, there weren't any rust and wasn't welded shut. It's just filled with bondo to give it that "custom" look. I'm hoping moisture (common case with bondo) didn't build over time and eat up the precious vents. Is there a way to tackle this to get the vents back? All in all, I'm a very happy camper. Here's a few pics the PO sent me before delivering her to Matson. I will definitely keep you posted with this thread and especially when I start working on my Fastback Very Happy

Thanks Mike! I was the total opposite. I always wanted a Square to park next to my Fasty hehe. Just followed up with Matson and the Square will be available for pickup the same week (first week of July) I arrive on the island. I hope my flights from Afghanistan to Kuwait goes smooth Very Happy

Thanks! i've been following your thread and your Square looks great! I like what you did with the color on the stock wheels. Plans for this Square won't be too much since I'll be concentrating more on refreshing/mildly restoring the Fasty. But after the Fasty is done, I'll be able to fully concentrate on the Square. I think the most work that I'll be doing to the Square is trying to get the cowl vents back. The PO filled it with body filler Crying or Very sad it makes me cringe to think what other things has been done that i don't know about. Other than that, just trying to bring her as close to stock, parts-wise; interior trim (headliner and dash) and exterior trim (de-accessorized and maybe early type side mirrors). ISPWest is gonna be quite happy with the amount of things I'll be ordering this week hehe. I'll also have to tune the suspension to my liking as well. I like lowered, but not scraping hehe. And the PO had to raise the Square due to Matsons Shipping requirements. As for the bus shifter. I'm changing it out to a stock shifter or a correct sized aftermarket shifter. From past threads, the weight of the bus shifter puts strain on your transmission and leading to premature wear. Sort of like resting your hand on the shifter while driving. As for the difference in shifting, i think with the added length, the shift throw might be longer?!?!

sounds like you have a good direction on it, but there are alot of things i see on there, and i ask myself... why would he do that?!?! like the paint, obviously a repaint, why would you do that to paint? myself i do like it to all be one color, the seats, i can't hate on thoes, someone put lowbacks in mine, the cowl, why would you just bondo those, and not delete those properly, the dash cover... WTF... but seriously finding all the sin the previous owner did is all part of the fun, i found some really redneck wiring, like using household wire nuts to splice wires together, and the PO on mine cut a hole in the shift tunnel when he converted mine to 4 speed, he used a cutting torch, and due to the heat it melted my brake line, but hopefully that is all done for now, can't wait to see how this one turns out

Aloha and thanks chaos! I'm pretty excited and can't wait to see it in person when July comes. I think the PO actually has a another project in the works too but not sure if it's a T3 or another ACVW. what year was the Fasty?

Thanks guys. yeah the color scheme is great. I think its L650 Granada Red. hehe i don't mind having the headliner. it actually looks cool in a sense. And since it's gonna be a pain to even replace it to original, it'll probably stay on for the time being. but the dash needs to be replaced hehe. oh and that tail lights...already got a pair of all red flats to replace them Very Happy ISPWest will be pleased with my two recent orders hehe.

Thanks! I can't really tell if that's the original Granada Red. According to the PO they clear coated the entire Square. But you can obviously tell where there's body filler because of the darker spots and hopefully I can recover the cowl Very Happy I actually feel bad about this thread because there's no actual work progress pics yet. I got really excited about the new purchase, but i'll be sure to keep you guys posted. There are so many build threads on here and they're really inspiring. i hope I can do the same for new and old T3 owners.

That was my first question when I saw the pics. It was definitely resprayed the same red color (was even primed before the re-paint), but why sand the paint off in spots, and let it rust? Was it some sort of "look" the PO was going for? Or did the paint blister in those spots?

I wonder what the PO used to fill in the fresh air vents. Hopefully he just duct taped them over, than put filler on top of it. Wink I've thought about filling in those spots on my Notch (due to rust), but I found a replacement section (Thanks Mike) for it, so it'll get replaced (fixed correctly).

Have fun, it looks like it'll be an interesting project. Cool

Hi. Very nice Square you have. You mention the closed vents...I have a Notch and actually had them cut out and new sheet-metal welded in. a) I like the look of it and b) very practical because of the rust which woud have led to heaps of rain through...but everyone is different Smile

Thanks lowslow! yeah the paint won't be changing anytime soon and i like it. it's like a full-bodied micorbrew. it's an acquired taste or just takes some time getting used to it hehe Laughing and i hope to keep you guys entertained with the Square and the Fasty in the near future.

LOL Matty! that's the first reaction i got when i got more pics of the Square . and my check already cleared with the PO so i couldn't change my mind Laughing

Bob and rubyghia, it's great getting feedback from both ends of the spectrum. i'm pretty set on trying to recover/get back the cowl vents. i looked around the forums (type 3 and body & paint) on how to remove body filler and especially topics regarding covered cowl vents. didn't find much info but i figure i'll try to attack it from the inside. gonna inspect it from the inside and maybe drill little pilot holes through the vents from the underside, then dremel it out from the outside. then, sand it down carefully. i could blast it with the multi-speed and wire brush but i don't wanna eat up more than i can replace hehe. i'm being optimistic and i just gotta figure it out when i get home in July.

rubyghia, i agree on your points...i'm just fixated on getting them vents back lol. yours was done properly and it looks really nice Cool ! and you didn't cover up the windshield fluid nozzle hehe. on the Square i think they covered that too Shocked

Again, Mahalo for all the feedback. it gets me more and more excited as the days near my vacation, and getting all of this feedback Very Happy

thanks, i mulled it over in my head on wheel choice, and my current budget i decided to go the stock 15x5.5 in the rear, and 15x4 up front, and i wanted to go with a color other then stock, i had painted some rivieras with the same color as i used on my steelies, and with the color choice i have for the car, i think it will pop nicely, i'm thinking either jetstream blue that comes on the ZR-1 corvette, or "blue candy" it comes on the 2013 ford focus electric

Congrats on your new square. I'm sure you'll enjoy the redo on the interior and keep that color as it's a cool rich red.

Thanks montehm! i don't mind the headliner being on there for the time being. especially when it's a chore to redo the entire headliner properly. It's the dash that bothers me more. maybe it'll be an easy peel. gonna start from a small area first to see how the peel goes hehe. Keep you all posted...soon! Very Happy

PostPosted: Mon Jun 18, 2012 9:08 pm    Post subject: lug conversion and wheels Reply with quote

Aloha All!
I'm leaving next week Saturday out of country and catching the commercial back home...And as the days near my vacation, I'm starting to contemplate on what else I can do to the Square that shouldn't be hard to do. Wheels and lug patterns...I really like the look of stock wheels (chrome trim and hubcaps) but also like the options of wheels with 5x130mm lug pattern. I've done a bunch of research for the past two days regarding 4 to 5 (5x130mm) lug conversions, wheel sizes, offsets, backspacing, etc. I hate to reopen another topic in the forums since it's been covered to a greater extent so I figure I keep in here. I do however have a few questions that I couldn't find.

First off I've been looking into two specific wheels that share the 5x130mm lug pattern; CIP1's Cosmics and Flat4's Fuchs (4.5 and 5.5").

CIP1 Cosmic
Size: 15x5.5
PCD/Bolt pattern: 5X130mm
Offset: ET45
Backspace: 4.95 inches

Flat4 Fuchs
Sizes: 15x4.5 and 15x5.5
PCD/Bolt pattern: 5X130mm
Offset: Unsure ET45/46?
Backspace: 4.95 to 5 inches(I think)
**i've read throughout the forums, that Flat4s are almost as close (offset) to the OG Porsche Fuchs. Also saw Mark's Variant build thread and he's using the same setup with the Flat4s. They look great!

My main questions are during the conversion. The Square currently has a 5" narrowed linkpin beam (Punchdrunk Customs) with 2 1/2" dropped spindles. And will be having 3" dropped springs from Jer*Fab (as soon as he get's my payment info). I've heard that you can just drill the 5x130 pattern on the rear drum and hub as well as the front disc rotors. Has anyone done this on their own without the help of a machinist? There's not many machinists back home that I know of that can do the work and most of the old school VW guys are either too old and or have passed ): However, I'll be able to access a drill press when I get home but I'd hate to mess up on the bolt pattern and have my wheels not be centered on the rotor or rear drum/hub. So I figure I tie into my budget. I found some front discs with 5x130 pattern and pressed in studs (12mm/14mm i think).

CIP1 Front Brake Disc Rotor 5x130mm
According to the description they should fit BEETLE/GHIA 47-79 / TYPE-3...I think I have to provide them with info regarding what inner and outer bearings I need. But will this rotor work?

Another question is regarding the rear. I had no luck finding an aftermarket Type 3 drum and hub with the 5x130 pattern. So I figure I may have to drill my existing drum and hub. Again, I'd hate to mess up on drilling the pattern myself and not having it centered in relation to the wheel. ISP has some pretty sweet chromoly hubs with the 5x130 pattern for pressed in and screwed in studs.

ISP Chromoly Rear Hub 5x130mm
The only reason why I'm looking at these hubs are because I can center my existing drum onto the ISP hub and use the hubs pattern to drill out my 5x130 pattern on the drum. Unless there's anyone who were able to drill these on their own. I know you use one of the existing holes from the OG 4-lug setup, but I'm afraid that my drilled 5x130 pattern won't be centered throughout the entire drum/hub This is my main concern before I decide to add these new products into my cart. Any suggestion would be great! Very Happy

Mahalo!
