Ever seen a rear stationary on a so42? |
Stationary closet glass is standard on an SO42. Most also have the rear two windows with popout mounts but no popouts as part of a normal Kombi build. |
M108 is "without five side windows", which means they only had the one solid in the closet. This in prep for the five jalousies. Almost all SO-42s have this. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

I spent a while trying to find m-code 342 on other SO42s that we know of, and none of them had it. A lot of 425 and 430. The closest I could find to 342 was 363, 370, and 374. The SO42s with the 3XX m-codes are all Tourist Delivery/ US Service Members stationed Overseas. It now makes sense why I couldn't find a bus with 342 on the m-code plate .
Did you buy your bus from redstock? Let's see some more pics of your bus!

a related note, my so44 was mcoded for 6 popout windows and even has all the mounts on every spot, even though it has the same standard 5 Hehr westy setup. It has the rear passenger popout though (no rear closet on that one which makes the window actually useable). Maybe that was to force a front drivers popout without it being a flipseat? I guess maybe there is no standalone code for that. |
Of the roughly 30 SO44's I know of, yours is the only one with jalousie/ Hehr windows. My guess is the previous owner added them. However, anything is possible especially if the original owners were planning on going somewhere with a ton of mosquitos like Central or South America; the jalousies would be more enjoyable than popouts. _________________

Recently picked up a 67 so42 fabrik 11707, UL delivery. The odd part is that it has a stationary sekurit closet window. The rest are Hehr as expected. It also has Mcode 342 which isnt on any lists. It does have the popout fixings for both rear windows though but no popout mounts on any of the others. Was wondering if anyone had heard of mcode342 or a stationary closet window coming from Westy?

Looks like that is actually B42. Look at the 3 below it for comparison. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

This bus recently popped up in the gallery.
Before this bus popped up, all of the two-tone Tin-Top SO42s that I knew of were no port code with no kit code versions on the mcode plate, had solid windows, and had Euro wall Lamps. This bus was originally painted Sealingwax Red & Beige Grey, it has TE as the export code, has a D42 kit version, and is mcoded for louvered windows.
Can anyone make out what is in front of the "1" on the mcode plate for the build date? Looks like a "W". _________________

I can't remember where I saw a pic of the '66 after the pictures you posted of it at Woodburn, but it was in Gene Langan's collection in CT. Not sure if he still owns it. I spent an hour trying to find the picture but I couldn't.

I found the picture I was looking for. For Reference:
I'm not sure where this bus is today. _________________

[quote="the bus driver"]Thanks very much, I didn't come across his add..
I've now managed to upload pictures in the gallery.
Those look really nice. Worth much more than $100 in my opinion, even though I hate saying that. I think I paid about $100 just for the covers recently. _________________ '73 Westy

I recently dug up some interior lights for the SO42 in my storage unit, they are in really nice condition.. I've tried adding photo's in the gallery (twice) but they don't appear.
It's the later export style..
I had bought these approx 15yrs ago to fit into my bus but it never happened and not sure if they will be installed.
Ive had a look around but I can't seem to find any so wondered what the going rate is for a set..? |
Hazetguy has a pair currently listed in the Classifieds for $110 USD shipped. The ad is a month old. I don't think it is a bad price. However, if you wanted to move them quickly, I would place an ad at a lower price.

Nice, it looks like someone recovered that bus?! |
Yes it looks like that to me.
This bus was on Thom's Vintagebus.com registry. I don't know how long ago Thom stopped the registry or when this bus was added to his registry, but the registry stated it was in Wisconsin. It is currently listed on Facebook Marketplace in Michigan. What I find funny is on the Vintage Bus registry, the fabrik # was listed as 52, but after studying the picture of the fabrik tag earlier in this thread, I thought it was a typo. I always thought it was interesting that the build date and vin were later than four other known SO42s including yours. It makes a lot of sense that it is #52 and not #2.
VelvetGreen's Fabrik #14 is back to being the oldest known SO42
So who is going to step up and put this rust bucket back on the road?!?!? |
I'm really tempted to make an offer on that bus and haul it home.
I'm pretty sure the tent and rails were an option from the onset of the so42 package. The early '65 Pop top I posted on page 13 of this thread has them, it has a Feb 3, 1965 build date. I'm pretty sure the holes in the drip rail on mine were for the rail. It's build date is jan 20, 1965, fabrik no 0021. And 0052 has them. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

Interesting to note that by 0052 it was already sporting the aluminum drip rail tent attachment. I wasn't aware that the add-a-room style tent was offered that early in 1965

Correct, the 5 was lightly stamped and difficult to see in that first pic of the Fabrik plate. In this pic you can see it more clearly.
