I just saw your posting on BAT then clicked over and went through this whole thread. If I wasn't in the middle of restoring a '72 Square I'd be bidding away. Would end up being cheaper too.
I have the rare Kasan Red ('72 only on Square) and have been deliberating on seat colors/materials. Don't want to keep the stock black (only option that year). I have a color scheme laid out with samples from TMI but now I really dig your seats. I avoided going into a red so it wouldn't clash with the body color.
Do you know the material numbers/colors for your seats? They are simple and clean. I'm afraid I'm going to go too far and make mine ugly.
Thanks |
Those are TMI covers - Red Mesh (338) with Brick Red (23) purchased through ISP West - Part number TM-43-3231. The seats were torn down, welded in a few spots, and rebuilt with TMI foam and burlap. The rear bench arm rest was a little tricky, I had to use my own vinyl material for the webbing. Front seat bases were blasted and powder coated satin black. |

That material was original to the car - it looks like some kind of (asbestos?) fiber board.
Funny story - I was driving the Notch yesterday after adjusting the idle. I'm on the freeway cruising along, and I see a Charlotte city cop pull up behind me. He blips his siren, and briefly flashes his lights. Damn..I'm thinking - I wonder if I've got a blub out or something...he pulls along my right side, keeps pace with me for a minute or so, then he smiles, pumps his fist a few times, and gives me a thumbs up! Gotta love it. |

That looks great! I wish I had the experience/balls to completely rebuild my Fastback like that. Fortunately mine came in comparatively good condition. Please post more whenever you can! _________________ 1967 Fastback (sold) |

|
|
So I can't believe it's been over a year since I updated my build thread - time for some catch up on the project. I am getting very close to finishing, the car is in shake down now and I'm still tending to some final details. It is running and driving, and all of the systems and accessories are working. I'm having some trouble with the idle (stalls) when it's up at operating temp, I'm going to work on that a bit this weekend. Other than that, the car is a blast to drive, I'm really looking forward to driving it much more as fall settles in and we get out of the 90 degree heat here in NC. Here are some pics that I took over the past year getting everything put back together, and a few recent pics from a cruise. I'll try to get some (finished) interior shots this weekend and post them up soon.
Sound Deadening Installation
Putting it back together
Getting the interior installed
Motor!
In the new shop - a little too low though
Better!
Thanks Pedro!
A recent day out

Posted: Sat Sep 14, 2013 5:17 pm Post subject: Wiring Issues - Advice/Help Appreciated -SOLVED |
|
|
I have been working on rewiring the Notch, and have had a few issues/questions that I though I would post. Apologies for the long post - but I thought it would be helpful to provide as much detail as possible.
Some facts for context:
I have a Bently manual and read it
I have printed out color copies of the wiring diagrams for my car from the tech section of the site (though they are not laminated)
I am using a continuity and VOM meter to check power
Installed a new complete wiring harness from ISP West
Car is 6V - keeping it stock
The car did not have it's original fuse panel - it has a 6-bank panel from a later year - I have attached a diagram showing how I have it wired.
I gave the panel a 3 day vinegar soak and then throughly cleaned all of the contacts prior to installing it - fuses are new, clean and making good contact.
New 6V Flasher Relay from ISP West
Correct 6V Headlight Relay (purchased used from the classifieds)
Here's what's working so far:
Low-Beams
Running Lights
Wipers (that was a long ordeal)
Horn
Cig Lighter
Clock
So here are the issues that I am having:
1. The turn signal flashers do not work - I am running the BLK/GRN wire from the steering console (54Bl) to the "L" terminal of the relay, and I have a BLK wire running from the relay to a fuse position powered by the ignition. I get nothing, no sound or lights when I move the turn signal stalk. I suspect the stalk - as I had to replace it and am not getting good self-canceling action (seeking advice on that too.)
UPDATE - Got this working today - one of the metal tabs that puts pressure on the large spring had bent on reassembly. I now have good self-canceling action and working flashers.
2. I cannot trigger the high-beams - OK - so the car had a floor switch installed - and I have not seen a high-beam floor switch on a Type 3 anywhere (Bently, photos, etc.) Was that a hack by the PO? I suspect so because there was no stalk flasher switch where there should have been one - it looked like it had broken off some time ago. I believe a stalk flasher should be the correct high beam switch for the car. As it happens, my stalk broke, and I decided to buy one off of the classifieds, so now I have a stalk with a flasher switch installed (I removed the floor switch.) The stalk has two wires for the flasher, a TAN/BRN wire, and a BRN wire. I am running TAN/BRN to position "S" on the Headlight Relay, and BRN to the Light Switch Terminal 58. I see power (with a continuity tester) on the "S" terminal when I press the flasher, but the rely does not trip.
UPDATE - Got this working today. I had not wired the relay or the flasher correctly. After carefully reviewing the diagram and re-wiring accordingly, the flasher is working and triggering the relay. I am still curious about that floor switch - if anyone knows if that was ever an option - I'd like to know.
3. No Instrument Lights - I am not getting any instrument lights. I have power to them via light switch terminal 58b, but no light. Should this car have an instrument light dimmer? If so, is that attenuated by the light switch, and is there a separate relay for that? I have a double pronged terminal on the light switch labeled "57" that I am not using - what is that for? I'm going to try new bulbs tomorrow - but thought I'd ask since I doubt all of the bulbs are shot.
UPDATE - Solved. Figured out that terminal 57 on the switch triggers the Parking Light Indicator on the cluster. It was a combination of grounding, and extremely dim instrument lights that were barely visible with my shop lights on. The switch is in fact a dimmer though there is not much noticeable difference between the lower and higher dimness. |

OK Bob - you get the "Where's Waldo" prize today. You are right...we had discussed it early on - but I forgot to mention it when he was working on the fenders, and didn't think about it again until it was finished. It's also missing an antenna hole. The car had been hit at some point on the drivers side front apron and fender, and the fender was replaced at that point with a US Spec. fender. The passenger fender has a side light cut-out. If you look at the before pics, the PO had just used chrome trim to cover the hole on the passenger side. My plan is to drill it - I like the look of side lights. |

My apron was in about the same shape. No way would it have ever looked right. So I had the body shop smooth it out. I kind of think it looks better anyway...
Love the pics on this car, it's a great build! _________________ 69 Fastback Build

also the damage you had on the front drivers side is very similar to mine, it looks like they replaced the fender on yours though. I've spent literally days straightening the 6"-1' of gnawed up metal on the front apron and getting it to a passable condition. How did you end up getting the dent out of the passenger side front apron, right before the fronk? I've got one of those and I can't get a hammer or dolly anywhere near where I need it to get that booger out. I see that you used filler, was that for the whole dent or did you use some method of working the metal first?
Dave |
Depending on where the dent is, I've used a baseball bat, 2 by 2's and assorted items like that to get rid of them. Just because you can't get there with a hammer and dolly, doesn't mean you can't use other methods to get rid of it. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I've got an apron similar to your condition, pre-smoothing and it is so hard to get straight. I'm thinking of drilling out the spot welds and trying to straighten it out on a bench with more room to work the metal
Dave |
I do not - paint and body work, as well as machining get farmed out. I usually try to work with cars that don't need paint work - but I ended up having to do it on this project to get the result that I want for the car. If you check the photo stream, there are many shots of the rear apron in progress, as it and the rear deck lid were the areas with the most damage. I know that my paint and body guy worked several days to get it where it is. |
